Nordic Walking was devised by super fit Cross country skiers as a way to train when no snow was on the ground! It is now recognised throughout Europe as a highly effective and adaptable exercise technique. However, it is not simply a case of grabbing a pair poles and swinging you arms about! Nordic Walking requires the correct technique in order to incorporate 90% of the skeletal muscles of the body and to increase the calories burned (up to 46% more than ordinary walking). The poles are used in order to facilitate the action and to fully impact on the whole body - they also allow people to work harder than they usually do without feeling it! Nordic Walking is the ideal way for people of all ages and fitness levels to simply get outdoors and get active!

This intensive two-day teaching course is aimed at individuals who wish to lead Nordic Walking groups safely and effectively, teaching the basics of Nordic Walking.

Upon successful completion of the INWA Nordic Walking Technique Instructor course you will be able to:

  • explain the background and benefits of Nordic Walking
  • determine who Nordic Walking is suitable for
  • teach the specific techniques of Nordic Walking, including dynamic and static stretching for warm up and cool down, and the basics of running with the poles and strength exercises
  • understand the anatomy relevant to Nordic Walking and the science behind the benefits
  • observe body movement to be able to correct and develop good Nordic Walking technique in others
  • Learn how to plan safe routes, deal with emergencies and lead with confidence
