Background
The UK population is getting heavier, with more and more people become obese and developing weight related health conditions including diabetes, heart disease and musculo-skeletal problems.
Helping people change their attitude, become more active, eat more healthily and develop the grit to keep going has never been more important. Weight loss drugs may help, and surgery will make a difference to some, but even people pursuing these remedies need behaviour change and may benefit from help from a skilled health coach.
Health coaching is an evidence-based approach to working with people to help them make lasting changes in their lifestyle. It is derived from motivational interviewing - a behaviour change technology which shown itself to be the intervention of choice in helping people make and stick with difficult lifestyle changes.
Dr Anstiss and his colleagues have all trained as trainers in motivational interviewing and have been working in healthcare and health and fitness settings for many years - using the approach themselves and training others MI and other behaviour change technologies. They have now taken the MI approach and blended it with proven coaching tools and techniques to develop a health coaching methodology suitable for use by professionals working within the leisure industry
